For the third time in nine years, the Tom Birch-led Lakes Media is confronted with what it believes is “illegal translator interference.” And, he’s pointing fingers at Raleigh media icon Don Curtis for an “open violation” of the FCC’s testing rules.
The matter involves Class C3 WLUS-FM 98.3, a station licensed to Clarksville, Va., that maintains a broadcast tower near Stovall, N.C., due north of Raleigh. In the eyes of the FCC, that’s way north of the Triangle region and such cities as Wake Forest and Durham. This has led the Commission to put its stamp of approval on an FM translator focused on the Raleigh market on the same signal as WLUS.
