The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) has selected the Poynter Institute to develop the next iteration of its Editorial Integrity and Leadership Program.

Fifty public media news editors will be eligible to receive leadership training “to ensure they are well positioned to meet their communities’ information needs.”

Kathy Merritt, CPB’s senior vice president of Journalism, Radio and Community Services Grant Services, commented, “Skilled, effective editors are vital to ensure the editorial integrity, rigor, and relevance of public media journalism. Today, newsrooms are at the front lines of helping the public navigate broad societal challenges, including online polarization and active disinformation efforts.”

Kelly McBride, Poynter’s SVP and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, added, “Public media is a crucial element in the news landscape and continues to expand its scope, reach and impact. The Poynter Institute is proud to work with CPB to help newsroom leaders hone ethical decision-making and strengthen the work of their journalists to better serve their communities.”

The first program, funded by CPB, trained 100 public media newsroom leaders at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2019 and 2020. The program is developing a coalition of public media news leaders who understand how important it is to act with integrity and are committed to strengthening the field through mentorship and collaboration

In this second phase of the program, 50 fellows from public media will be selected for the nine-month leadership development program.

Applications for the Editorial Integrity and Leadership Initiative are due May 15, with the first cohort of 25 fellows starting in September. To apply, go to https://www.poynter.org/shop/ethics/editorial-integrity-and-leadership-initiative-2023
