Courington To Gain Control of Northern Ala. Duo

It’s a Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) FM translator fed by an AM serving a community within Northern Alabama.

That AM and its FM translator, along with a Class C3 sibling offering Country music to the Gasden, Ala., market, are being transferred to a trust following the 2022 death of Tazewell Taylor Shepherd III.

The transfer of control request in front of the FCC involves Country WQSB-FM 105.1 in Albertville, Ala., and Class D WAVU-AM 630, branded as “Power 107.5” to reflect its programming simulcast on W298DG in Albertville.

The stations are part of a group of properties licensed to Sand Mountain Broadcasting Service, led by President Pat Courington Jr.

Following the passing of Tazewell Shepherd, Pamela Shepherd became the personal representative of his estate. Now, the estate is putting ownership of WAVU and WQSB directly into Courington’s hands through the “Ashley Fraiser Courington Trust.” Courington is the trustee for this trust.

For the outside world there will be no changes to the stations’ operations. However, the services of M. Scott Johnson at Smithwick & Belendiuk were necessary in order to demonstrate to the FCC that the licenses were properly transferred and are in good standing with Commission rules.
