A ‘Fun’ Acquisition For EMF

From its corporate headquarters in Central Florida, a family-owned radio broadcasting company with roots in Providence, R.I., operates AMs and FMs across six markets, including Lancaster, Pa.

That market, until now, has involved the operation of two FMs and an AM that combine to serve the area as an ESPN Radio affiliate. The other property is an Adult Contemporary FM with a “Fun” disposition.

That latter FM is about to get a lot of Love, thanks to a deal brokered by Kalil & Co.

Educational Media Foundation, the non-commercial entity that operates the KLOVE Christian Contemporary network and the Air1 Worship Music network, is purchasing WROZ-FM “Fun 101.3” from Hall Communications.

The Lancaster, Pa., station, a Class B with a signal that blankets the adjacent Harrisburg, Pa., and York, Pa., markets and can be heard in Reading, Pa., is being spun for $1,725,000.

A 10% escrow deposit has been made by EMF.

Todd Hartman of Kalil & Co. served as the broker in this transaction, representing Hall.

Serving as Hall’s legal counsel in the transaction is Susan Marshall of Shainis & Peltzman.

EMF once again used the services of Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP for its legal needs.

Hall is led by EVP Dan Dubonnet, who is based in the company’s Lakeland, Fla., headquarters.

WROZ was ranked fifth in the most recent Lancaster, Pa., ratings, where Hall competes against iHeartMedia and Cumulus Media in market No. 117. It also rates in Harrisburg, market No. 84; and is No. 6 overall in the York, Pa., ratings.

The “Fun” will soon end, however, with KLOVE gaining a signal in Lancaster and York; WHKL, which was WTPA-FM until February 2018, is a Class A licensed to Palmyra, Pa., that doesn’t reach those communities.

The format change is the latest in the region to involve an Adult Contemporary FM changing to KLOVE, and follows the demise of WINC-FM 92.5 in Winchester, Va., and WRQX-FM in Washington, D.C.
