The NBC affiliate serving the Queen City of the South is welcoming a new News Director. It’s an individual with years of experience in TV news in Oklahoma; Kansas; Missouri; and Michigan who began his career as an anchor/producer at KHGI-13 in Kearney, Neb.

Todd Spessard will now serve as the ND for TEGNA-owned WCNC-36 in Charlotte, starting March 4.

It’s a return to TV for Spessard, who since June 2023 has served as Director of Marketing in a consulting role for ClearSight LASIK & 43 Vision in Oklahoma City.

For 12 years prior to that, he was associated with Griffin Communications, leaving the company as Corporate VP of Content after rising from ND of KWTV-TV in Oklahoma City.

Prior experience includes roles as News Director for KOKI-TV in Tulsa; KSNW-TV in Wichita; KJRH-TV in Tulsa; and KMIZ-TV in Columbia, Mo.

Spessard started his career at KHGI in 1991, following his graduation from the University of Missouri-Columbia, home to one of the nation’s leading journalism schools.

“We are thrilled to welcome Todd to the WCNC Charlotte team,” said Joan Barrett, WCNC’s President/GM, who ranks among RBR+TVBR’s Top Local TV Leaders of 2023. “His wealth of experience, strategic vision, and dedication to excellence make him the ideal candidate to lead our newsroom into the future.”
