Sling TV has teamed up with smart TV maker Vizio to integrate local broadcast channels into its live streaming guide, a move aimed at bridging the gap between traditional over-the-air television and app-based streaming.
The feature, now available on select Vizio television models, allows users to access local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and PBS affiliates through the Sling TV interface, provided they have an over-the-air antenna connected to their television. Once connected, the channels appear alongside Sling’s lineup of streaming content, eliminating the need to toggle between TV inputs or separate apps.
The integration comes as streaming services seek to replicate the functionality of traditional pay-TV bundles while appealing to cord-cutters. Nearly 20% of US TV households use antennas to access free broadcast channels, according to Nielsen. Sling TV, a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp., is competing in a crowded streaming marketplace that includes traditional cable replacements such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Fubo.
EchoStar Video Services Senior Vice President of Product and Operations Seth Van Sickel said, “At Sling TV, we’re always looking for ways to simplify the viewing experience while delivering the best value in television. This integration with VIZIO allows our customers to effortlessly access their favorite local programming right alongside their Sling content, reinforcing our commitment to affordability, flexibility, and ease of use.”
The companies did not disclose the terms of the partnership or the specific number of compatible TV models.
