Broadcast TowerThe FCC has granted a non-profit permission to construct an LPFM station in downtown Orangeburg, SC, according to Harvey Elwood Jr., executive producer of New Perspectives Media Association.

“We are very pleased and excited about this wonderful opportunity to continue the work started on other stations in the area and now to have our own place to call home. It’s just fantastic” Elwood told The Times and Democrat newspaper.

According to Elwood, the association hopes to finalize building and construction and be ready for 24-hour, seven-day-a-week broadcast by 5/22

Approval by the city of Orangeburg of a variance for the radio tower at the rear of the building is pending, Elwood said. New Perspectives began broadcasting in Orangeburg in October 2010 on South Carolina State University’s 80-kW WSSB-FM 90.3, conducting interviews with leading citizens and organizations.

“In addition to radio 790 AM at Voorhees College and other stations, New Perspectives is a contributing media member of the Orangeburg County Educational Time Warner Channels 12 and 78.10 television stations and is intent on using the downtown location to also film portions of the daily television broadcast,” said the story. “Writer and Author Henry Dyson, a New Perspectives board member, said young people will play a key role in making the station a success: ‘Our goal is to allow students from all area colleges to gain real hands-on experience in both radio and film,” he said. “In fact we are building this community-based station to be left in the hands of the youth who today are growing into adulthood and are looking for lasting careers in broadcasting’.”
