As President-elect, Joe Biden spent months seeking to fill the fifth seat on the FCC, a chair that eventually went to Anna Gómez after two disastrous attempts to get Senate confirmation of Gigi Sohn.
Today, President-elect Donald Trump wasted no time in selecting the next Commissioner at the agency — and he won’t even be sworn in until Monday.
In a social media post, Trump shared that he’s “pleased to announce that Olivia Trusty will serve as a Commissioner” on the FCC.
Trusty, who six years ago was named Policy Director over the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet, and the Subcommittee on Manufacturing, Trade, and Consumer Protection by Roger Wicker, “has fought tirelessly to grow the economy, empower innovation and reignite the American Dream.”
Trump added that Trusty will work alongside Chairman-to-be Brendan Carr “to cut regulations at a record pace.”
Prior to January 2019, Trusty handled telecommunications and technology issues for Sen. Wicker. Before that, she worked on the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee and served as Legislative Assistant to Rep. Bob Latta (R-Ohio).
Among those immediately commenting on Trump’s pick is ACA Connects President/CEO Grant Spellmeyer.
Speaking on behalf of the lobbying group representing small and independent MVPDs, Spellmeyer said, “I’ve followed Olivia’s work for more than a decade, dating back to her time with Congressman Latta. Her record of accomplishment at Senate Commerce and Senate Armed Services speaks for itself. ACA Connects and all our Members look forward to working with her and Chairman Brendan Carr to cut red tape, promote innovation in rural communities, and further empower America’s small and independent broadband providers to close the digital divide.”
