Entravision to form new network with LER

0

RBR-TVBR first:

This will change the competitive marketplace for Hispanic Radio Networks: In January, Entravision bought out their stake in radio rep partner Lotus Entravision Reps (LER). LER became a consolidated and wholly-owned subsidiary of Entravision, so it was only a matter of time that Entravision’s Hispanic Network Radio affiliation agreement with Citadel Media Networks would eventually lapse and they would put that inventory on their own LER Hispanic Network(s). We’ve heard from multiple RBR-TVBR sources that is happening 5/8 and at least one additional network will be formed from it.

Howard Kalmenson’s Lotus Communications had been a 50/50 partner in its national rep since it launched the firm in 2001 with Entravision.

The national rep for Spanish-language radio stations today sells national spot for 156 stations, including not only the Entravision and Lotus groups, but a number of independently owned Spanish stations. LER said its station lineup reaches approximately 68% of the U.S. Hispanic market. It has offices in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Miami and Chicago.

Citadel Media’s current Hispanic networks include Hispanic Advantage (RADAR-rated), Hispanic Select (RADAR-rated); Metro Latino; Nuestra Familia and Nuestra Familia Weekend. Entravision is likely running on many of them–at least until May 8.

A reliable source tells us Citadel Media had already anticipated this move from Entravision and had made steps to replace the leaving Entravision stations with stations in the same and other markets. They don’t expect any “material” impact on their Hispanic business. We also heard Citadel Media wasn’t willing to pay a premium for those Entravision properties this time around. So price was an issue here.

RBR-TVBR observation: As you can see, Entravision has some big market stations—this should significantly boost LER’s presence in the marketplace. It could be a hit for Citadel Media’s Hispanic Radio Network presence, but right off the bat, Citadel keeps its biggest affiliate base in the Hispanic Network Radio arena with SBS—and we’re not sure what stations it has added, anticipating this. It’s a growing marketplace, with Univision leading the pack. Entravision had also had some affiliate relationships with another big player in the space, Hispanic Radio Network (HRN) up until the end of 2010. Dial Global has a presence too. Clear Channel is trying to get in as well, but they don’t quite have the critical mass of stations yet in major markets.
