ENCO Acquires Another Captioning Company

It was established in 2009 by a very close team working together for decades on broadcast video, video ancillary data, captioning, and hardware and software development. Now, this captioning solutions company that cut its teeth in France has become the third captioning firm to be acquired by suburban Detroit-based ENCO in the past year.

Joining TranslateTV, acquired in July 2022, and RUSHWORKS, which was purchased in January 2023, as their new sibling is DoCaption.

The acquisition of DoCaption closed on July 1, with ENCO retaining DoCaption’s entire product line, intellectual property, staff, and business operations. DoCaption is based in Valence, France.

DoCaption is known for its products used for captioning, subtitling, and ancillary data products for the broadcast and AV industries. As such, ENCO’s acquisition of DoCaption extends ENCO’s reach into these spaces.

“ENCO has long worked with DoCaption to deliver live, automated captions and insert closed captions into live broadcasts,” the Novi, Mich.-based company led by CEO Ken Frommert said. “The acquisition means that ENCO can now offer more complete, integrated and cost-efficient solutions for broadcasters and media companies, such as OTT channels, MVPDs and streaming services. Similarly, ENCO can offer more complete solutions to caption meetings, lectures, and presentations in live AV environments.”

ENCO will also add an entirely new product line with the DoCaption acquisition, as its products also include specific items for SCTE 104 metadata signaling and insertion for ad markers, SMPTE timecode generation for synchronization, scoreboard data encoding for venue displays and integrated open captions generators and keyers.
