WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Media Bureau is now seeking comment on a Petition for Rulemaking filed by HC2 Broadcasting Holdings Inc. asking the Commission to allow low-power television (LPTV) stations — on a voluntary basis — to use the 5G Broadcast transmission standard as an alternative to the currently-authorized ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 transmission standards.
As discussed in RBR+TVBR’s Spring 2025 magazine and in several articles at RBR.com, 5G Broadcast technology allows an LPTV station to transmit a single 5G signal and be received by any compatible mobile device within its service area. The petition from HC2, a major licensee of LPTV properties, proposes that the 5G Broadcast standard be incorporated into the Commission’s rules and authorized on a voluntary basis by LPTV stations.
This has resulted in MB Docket No. 25-168.
And, there’s a comment window now open for interested parties.
