What Broadcasters Can Learn From Auto Industry Disruption

He’s a “serial entrepreneur” in the automotive space, having launched several innovative business models that have disrupted and transformed the automotive industry. In fact, Scott Painter was an early adviser to Tesla and is also the founder of CarsDirect.com.

In 2005, he founded TrueCar, changing how consumers purchase vehicles, and in 2016 he founded Fair, a pioneer in the Car-as-a-Service (CaaS) category.

Painter knows a few things about disruption. And, broadcast media leaders should perhaps take heed in what Painter has to say on the subject. Applying some of his values to Radio and TV may greatly give an industry vulnerable to outside influences a stockpile of cash to benefit from while sailing through rough waters.

Painter, also known as the founder of Autonomy, will appear at broadcast media’s most prestigious leadership conference — Forecast 2023 — in a keynote interview with event Radio Chair Greg Ashlock, CEO/Multiplatform Group for iHeartMedia.

While some social media leaders are fueled by becoming disruptors, Painter has a very different viewpoint.

“Disruption should never be the goal,” Painter says. “Truly effective problem-solving and successful innovations often result in disruption. That said, being disruptive is often high-friction and very difficult on companies, and especially on founders. Having a track record of frequent disruptions is almost always a reflection of a hard-core, highly resilient entrepreneur.  One of two things is usually true if that’s the case: they are either stupid, or  they are right and on the verge of an epic outcome. I certainly hope I fall into the latter category.”

Ashlock adds, “Automotive has always been a cornerstone category for the broadcast industry, with our success closely linked to its performance. I’m excited to talk with Scott, a true auto entrepreneur and disruptor, about the electrification revolution and the transformational impact that will have on us as business partners and consumers.”

Now in its 20th year, Forecast is the broadcast industry’s leading financial summit. The conference gathers the smartest minds in broadcast and advertising to forecast trends, expectations, and revenues for the coming year.

Forecast 2023 is co-chaired by Greg Ashlock, iHeartMedia, and Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television, with Bob Pittman serving as honorary chair.

Forecast 2023 is expected to sell out this year. We encourage registration HERE now in order to secure one of the limited seats.
