Week 4: NBC 'Sunday Night Football' the power of the peacock

Led by “NBC Sunday Night Football,” which was the #1 primetime program of the week in adults 18-49 and other key demographic measures, NBC averaged a 2.1 rating, 6 share in adults 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers overall for the week of October 10-16, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research. For the week, NBC ranked #2 among the broadcast networks in adults and men 18-34 and tied for #2 in men 18-49.


This week’s “NBC Sunday Night Football” telecast, in which the Chicago Bears dominated the Minnesota Vikings 39-10, was the #1 primetime program of the week in the key demographic of adults 18-49, as well as adults 18-34, adults 25-54, and all key adult-male demos – men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54. Also ranking among the top 20 primetime programs of the week on the broadcast networks in adults 18-49 was “The Office,” which ranked #15 (tied; rankings exclude NBC NFL pre and post game telecasts).

Primetime averages for the week of October 10-16 in adults 18-49 were Fox (3.0/8), CBS (2.6/7), ABC (2.3/6), NBC (2.1/6) and CW (0.7/2). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (10.6 million), Fox (9.0 million), ABC (8.6 million), NBC (6.4 million) and CW (1.7 million).

NBC highlights for the week of October 10-16:

* On Sunday, NBC Sports’ “Sunday Night Football” telecast of the Minnesota Vikings at the Chicago Bears fueled a Sunday primetime win in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54, total viewers and all key adult-male demographics.

* On Friday, “Dateline” was up 25 percent in adults 18-49 and 16 percent in total viewers versus the same night last year. Season to date, “Dateline NBC” is up 13 percent in adults 18-49 and 15 percent in adults 25-54 versus one year ago.

* On Thursday, “The Office” finished within 1 share of the time-period lead in adults 18-49 and was #1 ahead of Fox’s “X Factor,” ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and CBS’s “Person of Interest” in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49. Week to week, “The Office” was up 3 percent in adults 18-49 and 5 percent in total viewers.

* Also on Thursday, “Community” grew week to week by 13 percent in both adults 18-49 rating and total viewers and “Parks and Recreation” increased week to week by 5 percent in 18-49 rating.

* Through the first two weeks of the season, NBC’s Thursday comedies “The Office” and “Community” are the #2 and #4 biggest gainers respectively on a percentage basis among all primetime half-hour comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven” 18-49 ratings. And NBC’s new Thursday comedy “Whitney” is #2 among first-year comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox in terms of percentage increase from L+SD to L+7.

* Also, NBC’s Thursday drama, “Prime Suspect” is tied as the #2 new drama on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox in terms of percentage increase in going from L+SD to L+7 through the season’s first two weeks.

* On Wednesday, “Up All Night” was up 62 percent in 18-49 rating versus NBC’s average in this time period last season. Versus NBC’s performance in the slot on the same night last year, “Up All Night” was up 50 percent in adults 18-49.

* Through the first two weeks of the season, “Up All Night” has gained an average 49 percent in 18-49 rating in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven day,” making it the #1 comedy on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox and the #2 show overall in terms of percentage increase from L+SD to L+7.

* Also on Wednesday, an encore telecast of “Whitney” hit season highs for NBC in the 8:30 p.m. ET time period in both 18-49 and total viewers against competition that included the second half-hour of CBS’s “Survivor,” ABC’s “Suburgatory” and Fox’s baseball playoffs. The “Whitney” rebroadcast delivered NBC’s highest 18-49 rating in this time period on an in-season Wednesday since February 9.

* Additionally on Wednesday, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” built on its lead-in by 75 percent in 18-49 rating, while competing 10 p.m. ET dramas on ABC and CBS declined versus their lead-ins. “SVU” grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key measures, while rival dramas on ABC and CBS declined in all key categories.

* Through the season’s first two weeks, “Law & Order: SVU” has added an average 45 percent to its 18-49 rating in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven day,” making it the #2 drama on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in terms of percentage increase from L+SD to L+7.

* On Tuesday, “Parenthood” grew versus the prior week by 5 percent in adults 18-49 and 4 percent in total viewers. Versus the same night last year, “Parenthood” was up 5 percent in adults 18-49 and up 13 percent in total viewers. Through the first two weeks of the season, “Parenthood” has added an average 38 percent to its 18-49 rating in going from “live plus same day” to live plus seven day.”

Also on Tuesday, “The Biggest Loser” gained 17 percent in adults 18-49 and 29 percent in women 18-49 from its first half-hour to its fourth, despite competition in the time period that included ABC’s premiere of “Last Man Standing” and the “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show, CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” and Fox’s Rangers-Tigers ALCS baseball coverage.

Ratings reflect “live plus same day” data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.”

Additional NBC highlights for the week of October 10-16:

On Monday, October 10 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Sing-Off” averaged a 1.5 rating, 4 share in 18-49 and 4.3 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period that included Fox’s special Major League Baseball Playoff overrun and “Terra Nova,” CBS’s “Two and a Half Men,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “2 Broke Girls” and “Mike and Molly” and ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Through the first two weeks of the season, “The Sing Off” has added an average 18 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

Monday at 10 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Prime Suspect” averaged a 0.7/2 in adults 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers overall.

On Tuesday, October 11 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser” averaged a 2.0/5 in adults 18-49 and 5.6 million viewers overall in an extremely competitive time period that included ABC’s premiere of “Lat Man Standing” and the “Dancing With the Stars” Results Show, CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” and Fox’s Texas Rangers-Detroit Tigers ALCS baseball coverage. From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Biggest Loser” gained 17 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.1 rating from a 1.8) and 29 percent in women 18-49 (to a 2.7 from a 2.1).

Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, “Parenthood” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 5.3 million viewers overall) was up week to week by 5 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.1 rating from a 2.0) and 4 percent in total viewers (5.255 million vs. 5.047 million). In the time period, “Parenthood” finished within 0.2 of a rating point of the top non-sports rating on ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49, ranked #1 non-sports in adults 18-34 and ranked #1 overall among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in women 18-49 and women 18-34.

Versus the same night last year, “Parenthood” was up 5 percent in 18-49 rating (2.1 vs. 2.0) and up 13 percent in total viewers (5.255 million vs. 4.663 million).

It is worth noting that through the first two weeks of the season, “Parenthood” has added an average 38 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure during premiere week (to a 3.01 rating from a 2.18).

On Wednesday, October 12 at 8 p.m. ET, “Up All Night” (2.1667 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall) was up 62 percent in adults 18-49 versus NBC’s 1.3 average in this time period last season (“live plus same day,” non-sports), despite intense slot competition that included CBS’s “Survivor,” ABC’s “The Middle” and Fox’s baseball playoff coverage. Versus NBC’s results in this half-hour on the same night last year, “Up All Night” was up 50 percent (2.1 vs. 1.4).

Through the first two weeks of the season, “Up All Night” has added an average 49 percent in 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” to its “live plus seven day” results (to a 3.38 rating from a 2.27), making it the #1 comedy on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox and the #2 show overall, behind only Fox’s “Fringe,” in terms of percentage increase from L+SD to L+7.

At 8:30 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Whitney” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall) hit season highs for NBC in this time period in both 18-49 and total viewers against competition that included the second half-hour of CBS’s “Survivor,” ABC’s “Suburgatory” and Fox’s baseball playoffs. The “Whitney” rebroadcast delivered NBC’s highest 18-49 rating in this time period on an in-season Wednesday since February 9. Week to week, NBC was up in the half-hour by 40 percent in 18-49 rating (1.4 vs. 1.0) and 22 percent in total viewers (4.0 million vs. 3.3 million).

Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET, “Harry’s Law” (1.2/3 in adults 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall) maintained its 18-49 rating of the first three weeks of the new television season. In total viewers, “Harry’s Law” so far this fall has delivered NBC’s four biggest audiences in the time period on an in-season Wednesday since February 2. Versus NBC’s total-viewer average in this slot last season, “Harry’s Law” this week was up 36 percent (7.837 million vs. 5.752 million, “live plus same day,” non-sports).

Through the first two weeks of the season, “Harry’s Law” has added an average 42 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 1.71 rating from a 1.20). On a percentage basis, “Harry’s Law” is tied as the #3 drama on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox in going from L+SD to L+7, behind only Fox’s “Fringe” (+59%) and NBC’s “SVU” (+45%) and tied with Fox’s “Terra Nova” (+43%).

Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2.1/5 in adults 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overal1) built on its lead-in by 75 percent in 18-49 rating, while competing 10 p.m. dramas on ABC and CBS were down versus their lead-ins. “SVU” matched its 18-49 rating of the prior two weeks. .

“SVU” grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key categories – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49, 25-54, plus total viewers – including gains of 10 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 2.2 from a 2.0) and 8 percent in total viewers (7.630 million vs. 7.045 million), while rival dramas on ABC and CBS declined in all key categories.

Through the season’s first two weeks, “Law & Order: SVU” has added an average 45 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 3.21 rating from a 2.22). On a percentage basis, “SVU” is the #2 drama, behind only Fox’s “Fringe” (+59%), and the #3 show overall on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox in going from L+SD to L+7 during premiere week.

On Thursday, October 13 at 8 p.m. ET, “Community” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall) grew week to week by 13 percent in both 18-49 rating (1.7 vs. 1.5) and total viewers (3.777 million vs. 3.346 million) in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “X Factor,” CBS’s “Big Bang Theory,” ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels” and CW’s “Vampire Diaries.” Versus its average in last May’s sweep, “Community” was up 13 percent in 18-49 rating (1.7 vs. 1.5) and 12 percent in total viewers (3.777 million vs. 3.385 million)

Through the first two weeks of the season, “Community” has added an average 35 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 2.37 rating from a 1.75). On a percentage basis, “Community” is the #4 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among primetime half-hour comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox.

At 8:30 p.m. ET, “Parks and Recreation” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 4.0 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 24 percent in 18-49 rating in a time period where NBC was on average flat last season versus original lead-ins from “Community.” “Parks” grew 5 percent week to week in 18-49 rating (2.1 vs. 2.0) in a competitive time period versus Fox’s “X Factor,” CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” encore, ABC’s “Charlie’s Angels” and CW’s “Vampire Diaries.”

The 2.1 18-49 rating for “Parks and Recreation” matches a season high and equals NBC’s top rating in this time period, excluding sports, since December 2, 1010.

It’s worth noting that through the first two weeks of the season, “Parks and Recreation” has added an average 30 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 2.72 rating from a 2.10).

Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, “The Office” (3.3/9 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) finished within 1 share of the time-period lead in adults 18-49 and was #1 ahead of Fox’s “X Factor,” ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and CBS’s “Person of Interest” in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49.

Week to week, “The Office” was up 3 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 3.3 from a 3.2) and 5 percent in total viewers (6.1 million vs. 5.8 million).

Through the season’s first two weeks, “The Office” has added an average 39 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 5.14 rating from a 3.71). On a percentage basis, “The Office” is the #2 biggest gainer from L+SD to L+7 among primetime half-hour comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox through the first two weeks of the season

Thursday from 9:31-10 p.m. ET, “Whitney” averaged a 2.0/5 in adults 18-49 and 4.3 million viewers overall. “Whitney” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in a tough time period against the concluding half-hours of Fox’s “X Factor,” ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and CBS’s “Person of Interest.”

Through the first two weeks of the season, “Whitney” has gained an average 32 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 3.79 rating from a 2.88). On a percentage basis, “Whitney” is #2 among first-year comedies on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox in terms of percentage increase in going from L+SD to L+7.

Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, “Prime Suspect” averaged a 1.3/3 in 18-49 and 4.6 million viewers overall. Versus NBC’s results in this hour on the same night last year, “Prime Suspect” is flat in 18-49 rating (1.3 vs. 1.3) and up 24 percent in total viewers (4.6 million vs. 3.7 million). “Prime Suspect” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS and NBC in the hour in men 18-34, men 18-49 and men 25-54.

Through the season’s first two weeks, “Prime Suspect” has added an average 33 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure (to a 2.19 rating from a 1.65). On a percentage basis, “Prime Suspect” is tied as the #2 new drama on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox in terms of percentage increase in going from L+SD to L+7, behind only Fox’s “Terra Nova” (+43%) and tied with ABC’s “Pan Am” (+33%).

On Friday, October 14 at 8 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “The Office” averaged a 0.7/2 in 18-49 and 1.9 million viewers overall. At 8:30 p.m., an encore telecast of “Parks and Recreation” delivered a 0.5/2 and 1.4 million viewers overall.

Friday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall) ranked #2 in the time period among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers.

From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Dateline” reported increases of 50 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.8 from a 1.2) and 26 percent or more than 1.2 million persons in total viewers (6.245 million vs. 4.970 million). .

Versus the same night last year, Friday’s “Dateline” was up 25 percent in adults 18-49 (with a 1.5 rating vs. a 1.2) and 16 percent in total viewers (5.761 million vs. 4.959 million). Season to date, “Dateline NBC” is up 13 percent in adults 18-49 versus one year ago (1.7 vs. 1.5) and up 15 percent in adults 25-54 (2.3 vs. 2.0).

On Saturday, October 15 at 8 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Harry’s Law” averaged a 0.4/1 in 18-49 and 3.1 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its second, the “Harry’s Law” rebroadcast grew by 25 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 0.5 from a 0.4) and 22 percent in total viewers (to 3.362 million from 2.746 million).

Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “Prime Suspect” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 50 percent in 18-49 rating and 17 percent in total viewers.

Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.1/3, 4.8 million viewers overall) tracked down NBC’s highest 18-49 rating in this time period, excluding sports, since May 14. From its first half-hour to its second, the “SVU” rebroadcast grew in all key ratings categories, including increases of 33 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.2 from a 0.9) and 22 percent in total viewers (5.298 million vs. 4.352 million).

On Sunday, October 16 the “NBC Sunday Night Football” telecast of the Minnesota Vikings at the Chicago Bears fueled a Sunday primetime win in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures. For its full duration, the Vikings-Bears game averaged a 6.6/16 in adults 18-49, 16.6 million viewers overall and a 10.1/16 household rating/share from 8:31-11:16 p.m. ET.

NBC ranked #1 Sunday night in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54, and all key adult-male demographics – men 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 – as well as total viewers. NBC topped its closest primetime competitor by 10 percent in 18-49 rating (5.7 vs. a 5.2 for Fox, which was boosted by an NFL overrun) and 6 percent in total viewers (14.5 million vs. 13.6 million for Fox).

Also on Sunday, “Football Night in America 2” from 7:30-7:58 p.m. ET averaged a 2.0/6 in 18-49, 5.3 million viewers overall and a 3.3/6 household rating/share. “Football Night in America 3” from 7:58-8:22 p.m. delivered a 3.9/11 in 18-49, 10.6 million viewers overall and a 6.5/11 in households. From 8:22-8:31 p.m., “NBC Sunday Night Football Pre Kickoff” averaged a 5.3/14 in 18-49, 14.4 million viewers overall and an 8.8/14 in households. Note: “Football Night in America” from 7-7:30 p.m. ET was sustaining programming and does not figure in the nightly or weekly primetime averages.
