In the analog television era, thousands of commuters could tune to 87.7 MHz in South Florida to listen to the audio feed of WTVJ-6, bringing Today to the car. Similarly, CBS affiliate WRGB-6 in Schenectady, N.Y., brought the audio of what was broadcast over the TV to the radio.
Now, in a bit of a throwback to those days, a FOX Television Station is bringing its audio to a HD multicast signal of an Atlanta FM — but on the right end of the dial.
WAGA-TV, branded locally as “FOX 5,” has partnered with Urban One-owned WHTA-FM in Atlanta to launch a 24/7 audio simulcast channel of the television station’s streaming content.
This means the HD2 signal of the 107.9 MHz frequency will offer a continuous simulcast of the broadcast TV station.
WAGA Sr. VP/General Manager Bill Schneider commented, “Our team at FOX 5 is constantly seeking out new ways to deliver our news, weather, sports and lifestyle programming to north Georgia consumers in whatever way is most convenient for them. Making our streaming audio available to radio listeners is an important part of that effort and we’re grateful to the professionals at Radio One Atlanta for helping to make that happen”
As Derek Harper, Operations Manager for Urban One in Atlanta sees it, “We have had an excellent partnership with Fox 5. Streaming their local news content on our Hot 107.9 HD2 channel will bring even more original content to our listeners.”
