It sought to fill a perceived broadcast television void by emulating the programming of CNN Headline News circa 1991. And, it saw Manoj Bhargava snap up a collection of low-power television stations to help build out NewsNet. Today, there is no more NewsNet, and its owned properties are being divested — including two Michigan LPTVs. The buyer is one of the low-power TV industry’s most familiar faces.
Jeff Winemiller would be the buyer, as his Lowcountry 34 Media has agreed to purchase WMNN-LD in Lake City, Mich., and WXII-LD in Cedar, Mich., from Bridge News.
It’s a bargain deal for Winemiller, as Lowcountry is paying $25,000 for each station, putting the total investment at $50,000, an asset purchase agreement notes.
A $2,000 escrow deposit is being held with The Law Office of Dan J. Alpert.
The sale of WMNN and WXII is notable as they served as Freelancer Television Broadcasting’s two original NewsNet broadcast homes. WMNN serves Cadillac, while WXII reaches Traverse City. NewsNet launched under the leadership of Eric Wotila in January 2019. Today, licensee Bridge News is administered by President of Over-the-Air Operations Scott Centers.
