TEGNA’s ‘FOX61’ Rebrands Its News Offerings

A 30-second advertising airing during the Super Bowl LVII halftime show served as the official kickoff of a new news brand for TEGNA‘s FOX affiliate serving not just Hartford or New Haven, but the entire Constitution State.

This explains why “FOX61,” WTIC-TV, is now “Connecticut’s News Station.”

As TEGNA sees it, the new branding “speaks to FOX61 News’ evolution as a trusted, balanced and ‘always on’ source of news for Connecticut residents.”

According to WTIC-TV, which is not related to WTIC-AM & FM, the TEGNA property is the “only” home in the state for “all local all morning” telecasts — a jab at Gray Television’s WFSB-3, the CBS affiliate; Nexstar Media Group-owned WTNH-8, the ABC affiliate; and NBC O&O WVIT-30, which brands itself as “NBC Connecticut.”

In addition to WTIC-61, sibling WCCT-20 serves as The CW Network affiliate for New Haven-Hartford. The station’s President/GM, Humberto Hormaza, commented, “Our commitment to local news is our top priority every day. We have listened to our viewers, and they have made it clear to us they seek a consistent source of accurate, balanced, inclusive and trustworthy news for the stories that matter to them and their communities.”

WTIC-TV News Director Richard Washington III added, “We have built a solid team of journalists and meteorologists who know the people of Connecticut and understand their needs. Our new brand is aligned with our mission to be the trusted source for news in this market.”
