Solar-Powered Puccini: A Classical FM Fuels Green Power

The Classical FM serving Texas’ state capital may be best-known across the Lone Star State as a home for the works of Bach, Rachmaninoff, and Schubert. Now, it could say, in a way, that its also the home of the Electric Light Orchestra or The Power Station.

KMFA-FM 89.5 in Austin has put its dollars into an 89.64-kWDC rooftop solar project.

There’s more than just solar panels, Solar Power World reports.

The radio station’s parking lot will soon host four electric vehicle charging stations,  equipped with universal chargers for any EV owner to use.

Austin-based Axis Solar teamed with KMFA for the project, and Axis will install an array composed of 166 solar panels, the maximum number allowed by the City of Austin.

The solar array is designed to replace an estimated 133,000 kilowatt hours of power billed each year to the local utility company.

In fact, the solar project will supply power to Austin Energy.

In return, KMFA will receive a billing credit, cutting its average bill between 40% and 50%.

The installation of the solar panels is expected by the end of next week.

The EV charging stations are scheduled to be operational by end of June.
