A Golden State Deal That Returns ‘Rocking M’ Name

A family-run company with a very familiar name to many radio industry leaders has agreed to purchase an AM/FM combo and three FM stations. To be clear, this deal does not involve Monte or Doris Miller, but six Montgomery family members and a station employee who have come together to form Rocking M Media Group.

The stations are in the Chico-Redding, Calif., DMA — in Susanville, Calif., due northwest of Reno, Nev., and are being sold by Rodney Chambers’ Sierra Broadcasting Corporation and KSUE Development Partners L.P.

Involved in the transaction are KSUE-AM & KJDX-FM in Susanville, along with K224DZ in Quincy, K229BW in Chester, and K281BT in Portola, Calif., in addition to real property associated with the stations in Lassen County, Calif.

KSUE is a 1kw Class C radio station with a News/Talk format. KJDX is a Class C0 FM offering the “Sierra’s Best Country.”

A $550,000 purchase price has been agreed to by the parties, with a 10% escrow deposit made on December 2, 2025 to The Exline Company. This came ahead of the April 7 codification of an Asset Purchase Agreement filed for FCC regulatory approval. With the filing, an additional $45,000 was placed in escrow by the buyer.

At closing, seller financing will comprise a Promissory Note for the amount of $450,000.

Once the deal is done, $315,000 will be assigned to real estate; $235,000 is tied to broadcast equipment and goodwill.

Who are the individuals associated with this iteration of Rocking M? Chris Lee Montgomery is taking the lead; he holds 26% equity interest. Montgomery has hosted the morning show for KJDX for 15 years.

Other equity holders include 25% interest holder Stacey Lee Montgomery, his wife; Chris’ parents and the current station General Manager, each individual with 15% interest; and two adult children who each hold 0.2% equity interest. They happen to be Trident MMP recording artist Caleb Montgomery, Chris’ son, and his younger brother, also a musician.

The Exline Company’s Andrew McClure served as the broker in this transaction. Acting as legal counsel is Cary Tepper of Tepper Law Firm.

Contacted by RBR+TVBR, Chris Montgomery explained that the “Rocking M” name comes from the name of a family ranch in Lassen County. He did not know that there was previous “Rocking M” that had gone through a series of unfortunate events including Chapter 7 bankruptcy, documented in various articles by this publication.
