New Longform Unit Devoted To Scripps News Documentaries

Scripps News has moved forward with an effort that will “significantly expand” its documentary programming by creating a new longform unit devoted to producing cinematic offerings for Scripps News platforms and its distribution partners.

The division of The E.W. Scripps Company that includes the digital multicast network formerly known as Newsy sees new full-time hires, each with experience producing documentaries — something that has proven to be a ratings-driver and revenue enhancer for CNN.

Overseeing the Scripps News documentary programming is Zach Toombs, who is being promoted from within and was formerly Deputy Director of Programs. He reports to Scripps Head of Program Development Ethan Nelson.

Scripps News President Kate O’Brian commented, “Scripps is proud to be expanding our award-winning documentary programming. Not only is the content engaging, but this kind of compelling longform broadcast journalism is essential to keeping viewers informed and
enlightened.”

Toombs added, “At a time when the ethical lines of documentary production are increasingly blurred, we’re keeping journalism and the journalistic process at the center of our work. Our mission is to create documentaries and series that inform, entertain and build trust with our viewers.”

Planned documentaries include the April 2 airing of “In Real Life: Crypto Crash”; and the April 16 broadcast of “In Real Life: Next Gen Stunts”. the May 7 Scripps News Showcase “No Greater Love”; the May 14 airing of “In Real Life: Ukrainian Sniper”; and the May 21 broadcast of “In Real Life: Voices of Nature.”

Scripps News did not detail the other hires fueling the expansion.
