A Hip-Hop Radio Icon Gets A ‘MaxxCasting’ Boost

SANTA MONICA, CALIF. — For its first generation of listeners, KPWR-FM in Los Angeles was known for its “72,000 watts of music power” — a top-of-the-hour descriptor conceived by then-owner Emmis Communications as a way to deflect from the fact that the station’s signal contour was inferior to other Southern California FMs.

Today, “Power 106” is “#1 for Hip-Hop,” is owned by Meruelo Media, and has a 25kw facility atop Mt. Wilson. Because of terrain, reaching the Antelope Valley cities of Lancaster and Palmdale hasn’t been easy. This will soon change, thanks to GeoBroadcast Solutions’ MaxxCasting system.
