Cup ‘O Dirt, besides being the author of an awesome licensee name, is also the author of an awesome ROI on the purchase and subsequent sale of KZOY-AM Sioux Falls.
It’s all the more amazing taking into consideration that the station is a day-timer with only a half of a kilowatt of power taking it to the local population.
The secret – K221FO, the translator that puts the station on the FM dial and keeps it on air after the sun goes down.
Seller is Cup O’ Dirt, headed by President John Small.
The buyer is Badlands Airtime LLC, headed by Charles Brennan.
The price is $1,500,000 cash. Half of this amount is being placed in an escrow account in advance of closing.
Badlands acquired the station from Barry Drake’s Backyard Broadcasting pursuant to a 2/8/10 contract. At the time, the call letters were KSQB-AM. The price back then: $250,000.
KZOY-AM is a Class D on 1520 kHz with 500 W-D, ND.
The translator is 92.1 MHz K221FO Sioux Falls SD, with 99 W @ 189’.
The stations simulcast ‘80s Rock. The AM does a fine job of covering Sioux Falls with its 500 Watts. The translator also gets the yellow part of the Sioux Falls map, and is listed first on the duet’s website.
The market was once on the Arbitron roster but radio stations there are currently unrated. Nielsen does provide ratings for local television.
RBR+TVBR observation: Anybody who is wondering about the value of a well-located FM translator to a signal-challenged AM station need look no further than this pair.
