In May 1976, an Ashland University graduate took at job at WUAB-TV in Cleveland, focusing his efforts on television production, promotions and programming. That experience would lead him to a role directing the programming for the publicly traded television broadcasting company founded by Julian Smith.
Now, after nearly 50 years in the industry and 30-plus years with Sinclair Inc., its SVP/Programming is ready to say goodbye.
Dave Howitt, who rose from Vice President of Programming in August 2022 after taking that role in September 1994, will retire on March 31.
“Howitt has been a cornerstone of Sinclair’s programming operations, focusing on the acquisition of syndicated programming and program scheduling, overseeing syndicated programming efforts for 43 markets and 90 stations,” the company said in an announcement distributed Monday.
With Howitt’s retirement, the company has selected Linda Greenwald and Matthew Diehlmann to share duties as co-Directors of Programming. Diehlmann is presently Corporate Programming Director, and gained the role to start the year after rising from Corporate Programming Manager. He’s been associated with Sinclair for 13 1/2 years.
Before joining Sinclair, Howitt also led WTTV-TV in Indianapolis. His resume includes roles at TV stations once owned by United Artists, Gaylord Broadcasting, Cannell, and River City. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredible people at Sinclair, stations, program distribution companies, and networks,” Howitt said. “Throughout my career, I’ve had a front-row seat to the evolution of television, particularly in broadcast syndication and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities this industry has provided.”
Arthur Hasson, Sinclair’s Acting Chief Operations Officer for Programming, commented on Howitt’s retirement. “We salute Dave and his contributions to making Sinclair one of the nation’s largest local media companies,” he said. “Dave’s expertise extends across all aspects of our industry, and he will be greatly missed.”
