NEW YORK — Come December 1, 49 years of service at Hearst Television will come to an end for Larry Vancini. This will see a new individual take on the corporate role of Director of Broadcast Information Technology, and it is an individual who since 2002 has served in various engineering and IT roles at the company’s two TV stations in Greensboro, N.C.

David Callahan is rising to the role, and presently holds the position of IT Manager at Hearst-owned WCWG-TV & WXII-TV in the DMA that includes Winston-Salem and High Point.

Callahan reports to Hearst Television Vice President of Information Technology Kenneth Murphy, who in turn reports to RBR+TVBR Top Local Technology Leader Stefan Hadl, who serves as VP/Broadcast Engineering & Technology. Hadl calls Callahan “an extremely talented systems engineer who has been an invaluable member of the Hearst Television technology team for many years. His diverse experience in the broadcast industry affords him a special vantage point and understanding of our operations and technology, making him the perfect individual to help lead our television properties’ IT needs into the future. We congratulate David on this well-earned promotion, and we thank Larry for all his many contributions to our company and industry, and we wish him all the best in retirement.”

Callahan is son of a mobile truck engineer at UNCTV in North Carolina. He joined Hearst Television at WXII as a maintenance technician, playing a key role in transitioning the station’s video infrastructure from analog to digital transmission. Later, as the station’s IT manager, he adopted server virtualization technologies as well as newsroom, production, and master control automation systems. Recently, he led one of Hearst Television’s first implementations of a new standard enabling transmission of uncompressed video over IP networks. Prior to Hearst, he served in various production and engineering roles within the market at Sinclair Broadcast Group-owned WXLV-45, the ABC affiliate in Greensboro.
