Eight Weeks Later, Radio Zindagi Returns To Long Island AM

If the Radio Zindagi brand sounds familiar to you, it should. On October 2, RBR+TVBR reported on the sale of an AM radio station in Nassau-Suffolk, N.Y., with 10kw during daylight hours and 220 watts at night, using a directional two-pattern signal with 2 towers.O

The station aired the network, providing South Asians with music and entertainment tied to Indian, Sri Lankan and Pakistani culture. A format change was anticipated.

That happened. Now, Radio Zindagi is set to return, thanks to a fresh spin of the station by the entity that just bought it.

Class B WBWD-AM 540, licensed to Islip, N.Y., is being spun by Metro Mex USA LLC, a Massachusetts-based company that will likely retarget the AM to a Spanish-speaking audience. It is led by Luis Morales.

Back in October, Morales’ group paid $700,000 for WBWD, formerly WLIE, from Charlie Banta’s Universal Stations LLC.

Now, Metro Mex USA is agreeing to sell WBWD to Om Sai Broadcasting, an Edison, N.J.-based operation wholly owned and operated by Yash Pandya.

A LMA dated December 7 was signed, effectively giving Om Sai the opportunity to return Radio Zindagi to 540 kHz.

It had been at WNYH-AM 740 in Huntington, N.Y., since October, replacing Korean-language religious programming. That’s now back, essentially erasing the on-air switch seen two months ago.

To make that happen, Om Sai is paying $1.3 million, as follows: A $200,000 escrow deposit was made, while $950,000 will be paid at closing. The remainder of the purchase price ($150,000) will be represented in a secured promissory note.

The escrow deposit is being held by the Law Office of David J. Barber.

Representing Morales as legal counsel is Shelley Sadowsky.
