Tune to the FM dial in the Kansas City market, and chances are you’ll end up listening to one of the top-rated stations owned by Cumulus Media. Here, the company led by CEO Mary Berner enjoys a one-two punch with Classic Hits KCMO-FM and Classic Rocker KCFX “101 The Fox.”
Cumulus also happens to operate a group of popular radio stations in Kansas’ state capital, Topeka. Now, thanks to technology — and the need to keep expenses at bay — Cumulus is shifting operations of those stations to its K.C. hub in Mission, Ks.
Streamline Publishing’s Radio Ink first reported the news early Friday. A company spokesperson said Cumulus Media “has consolidated the studios and management of its Topeka and Kansas City stations in Kansas City, but there have been no changes to programming for Cumulus Topeka stations.”
In Topeka, Cumulus operates Rocker KDVV-FM, Adult Contemporary KMAJ-FM, Classic Hits KWIC-FM, Country KTOP-FM, News/Talk KMAJ-AM and Sports KTOP-AM. It vigorously competes against Connoisseur Media, which entered Topeka with its merger acquisition of Alpha Media. ”All local sports will continue to broadcast on The Big Talker. Our vital local partnerships with clients and the Topeka community remain a key priority for our Topeka team,” the spokesperson told Radio Ink.
The consolidation explains the December 2025 exit of Cumulus/Topeka Operations Manager Amber Lee.
In Kansas City, ranked No. 34 by Nielsen Audio, Cumulus’ KCMO and KCFX are perennial market dominators. They are joined by Hip-Hop-focused KCJK “Power 105.1,” Talk KCMO-AM & FM, KCMO HD2 “102.5 Jack FM,” and Top 40 KMJK-FM “The Vibe.”
