Blue Alerts Added By FCC To Nation’s EAS

When it comes to the protection of law enforcement officers across the U.S., there's no question if bipartisan support can be had. Yet, one Democrat expressed reservations and a partial dissent as all five Commissioners today approved a Report and Order that would amend the Commission’s Emergency Alert System (EAS) rules to add a dedicated event code to facilitate the delivery of Blue Alerts over the EAS and Wireless Emergency Alert system.

House Majority Opposes New Radio Royalty Fees

If the Ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come were to pay a visit to radio stations across the U.S., they'd be likely bringing good tidings: There will be no new performance fees, taxes, royalties or other charges for a local AM or FM broadcast station owner. That's all but certain, now that a majority of the House of Representatives has expressed their support of a resolution opposing any legislation that would impose such payments on a broadcast company.

JVC Makes A ‘Sugar’-Sweet Deal In The Sunshine State

A Class D AM radio station surrounded by Florida's sugar cane fields near Lake Okeechobee has a long history of broadcasting. It's seen several owners, and identities, and was most recently branded as "The Talk of the Palm Beaches" in attempt to draw listening from Palm Beach County instead of the small towns surrounding this facility's tower. Now, this Belle Glade, Fla., AM in existence since October 1947 is trading hands.

Willful, Repeated EEO Violations Ding Cumulus For $20K

Now is probably not the time for Cumulus Media to be handing over $20,000 to the FCC. However, that's likely set to happen -- pending a successful appeal or reduction of the penalty -- thanks to the Media Bureau's issuance late Monday of a Notice of Apparent Liability (NAL) for what it calls willful and repeated EEO violations. The violations were discovered through a random spring 2011 Media Bureau audit of its EEO program.

Another Blow Up At The FCC For Honolulu AM Operator

The owner of a pair of 5kw AM radio stations based in Honolulu has received a Notice of Violation from the Commission for failing to follow its rules regarding antenna structures. The broadcast company should know better. The Commission sent a nearly identical notice to this radio station owner in March 2014.

This comes despite a disappointing Q3 that has sent Salem shares back toward a five-year low.

Keys To Small-Market Success, From West Central Iowa

There's an AM/FM combo in West Central Iowa that has been singled out for its success, in many ways, by Media Information Bureau columnist Ken Benner. These stations have not only achieved perfect scores in alternative broadcast inspection program (ABIP) inspections, but are also fiscally fit and community leaders. Benner recently asked the stations' owner, Mike Dudding, what his secret of his success has been. Here's what Dudding had to say.

Seven Tips To Consider During ‘Hiring Season’

"Hey, can I see you for a minute?" It's the one question many broadcast media professionals don't want to hear and tremble with fear when summoned to the boss' office -- in particular, right before the holiday party they won't be attending. Pink slips, rather than holiday bonuses, are a business reality. RBR+TVBR Editor-in-Chief Adam R Jacobson has experienced it, too. But, he says, this is also the perfect time to hunt for work. Here's how his ingenuity led him to a career covering radio, and a career not covering radio, for a decade.
