Radio and Television Transactions

Alan Usher and his company have officially parted ways with a pair of Class C1 FM radio stations in Nebraska. The Buyer is a Kansas-based, employee-owned company headed by Gary Shorman and Kurt David. Kalil & Co. served as the exclusive broker in the transaction.

In late July, RBR+TVBR reported on the sale of a Class B AM and its associated FM translator by Clay Holladay's New South Radio to Matthew Wesolowski’s SSR Communications. Now, Wesolowski is flipping the properties, giving iHeartMedia a solid anchor in Jackson, Miss.

In late May, a recently formed entity forged in Upstate New York between Ricki Lee and Aaron Ishmael, agreed to acquire a pair of FM radio stations in the Knoxville market. The deal has now closed, and formally transfers to the business partners assets that once belonged to a man also known for his ownership of the last big-watt "B/EZ" FM station in a top 100 market

The estate of Tom F. Huth, under the direction of executor Dwilynda Huth, has sold a presently silent AM radio station with an FM translator tied to it that serve a city due north of Sacramento and to the south of Chico, Calif.

Golden City Broadcasting LLC is an Irwindale, Calif.-based licensee led by James Su. That entity made headlines in June, when it agreed to sell Las Vegas-market KADD-FM 93.5, licensed to Logandale, Nev., to Radio Activo 2 LLC. The buyer, a Las Vegas-based broadcasting company, has now struck a second deal with Su.

The Morgantown, W. Va., based radio broadcasting company led by President Dale Miller, widely known as the employer of the late programming executive Lacy Neff, is growing. It's acquiring an AM/FM combo, and an FM translator, covering rural Hancock County, Md., in addition to parts of the Mon Valley in Pennsylvania and the West Virginia city of Martinsburg.

In 1995, former Z100/N.Y. GSM and VP/GM Gary Fisher began buying radio stations, and today serves as owner and President of Equity Communications of Atlantic City, N.J. Now, Fisher is selling one of the FMs in his stable along the Jersey Shore.

It emanates a "mighty 10 watts of power from a sheep ranch on the western edge of the North American continental plate." And, it broadcasts from the exact spot, it claims, where radio pioneer Marconi built a radio tower in 1914 that received signals from ocean-going vessels. Now, this station known to locals as "Jive Radio" is being transferred to a new licensee.

In November 2015, Jay Bunyard told RBR+TVBR that he'd like one of his licensees to sell an AM. Then came the sale of four FMs and an FM translator in Arkansas -- or so we thought. That deal never closed. Now, Bunyard is trying again.

In February 2015, a station group serving a mid-sized Georgia market opted to even things by adding a second AM station to their local cluster. The compensation package, as RBR+TVBR reported at the time, was "heavily back-loaded," and also gave the buyer an associated FM translator for the property. Now, this deal has finally closed.

An FM translator serving Wisconsin's state capital will soon be licensed to Educational Media Foundation, the religious noncommercial radio giant that runs the KLOVE Christian Contemporary Music and Air1 worship/praise music networks. To get it, EMF is giving up an AM and two FM translators serving Northwest Ohio's largest market.

Gray Television is picking up a quintet of television translators presently tied to a full-power station presently offering This TV programming. It is tied to an intellectual property play that gives Gray the local FOX affiliate -- pairing it with its ABC and NBC affiliates serving the Sioux Falls, S.D. market.

Until now, the Tom Syner-led Zack Media South has served as the licensee of Class D WRRL-AM in Rainelle, W. Va., and a pair of low-power TV stations serving the West Virginia cities of Beckley and Clarksburg. Now, Zack Media is adding another radio property to its media stable.

On Sept. 1, RBR+TVBR reported on the sale of an FM radio station licensed to Eatonville, Wash., from a trust presently administered by former Backyard Broadcasting President/CEO Barry Drake. The buyer has officially closed on the purchase of this facility, which two decades ago was known as “The Funky Monkey” and aired a Active Rock format.
