A Motor City First For AR/VR TV News Arrives

As part of an effort being seen across all CBS Owned Stations, the UHF facility that airs the CBS Television Network in the Motor City and surrounding communities is flipping the switch this afternoon on what the Paramount unit calls “the first-ever Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technology-driven studio.”

The new technology will debut during the WWJ-62 newscast at 5pm, with “CBS Detroit” offering AR/VR-enhanced weather forecasting, something other CBS O&Os have offered viewers.

For Paramount, the launch in Detroit is part of a “major investment in immersive storytelling and next-generation journalism.”

“Having seen firsthand how AR/VR strengthens local journalism, it’s especially meaningful to bring this technology to Detroit,” said Jennifer A. Lyons, Regional President and General Manager of both CBS Detroit and CBS Chicago. “It powerfully enhances storytelling – making complex information clearer, more engaging and more immersive – while allowing us to elevate how we explain, visualize and connect with the communities we serve.”

CBS Detroit becomes the 11th station to debut an immersive AR/VR studio.

“This is a big moment for Motown,” said Kennan Oliphant, Station Manager and VP of News at CBS Detroit. “Detroit has always been a place of innovation and creativity, and this investment aligns with that legacy. Being the only station in the market using AR/VR technology allows us to push forward with journalism that is modern, thoughtful and focused on the community we serve.”
