Energy Exhausted: Iowa Shutdown Marks Latest Small-Town Radio Struggle

0

Once upon a time, a small city in Poweshiek County, Iowa, became the home of liberal arts institution Grinnell College. Since its 1846 founding, the school has attracted students from across the U.S. Otherwise, Grinnell has had few economic growth opportunities since the 1916 demise of the Spaulding automotive factory due to Ford’s massive industry growth.

Today, Grinnell is sandwiched between Des Moines, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, with radio stations from these markets easily accessible. For Alpha Media, that was a challenge. With Connoisseur Media‘s debt-fueled merger with that company, Grinnell was added to the assets of the Jeff Warshaw-led company, which has been actively assessing every Alpha market and its growth opportunities for Connoisseur.

Grinnell was a market where few opportunities for Warshaw are found. As such, he pulled the plug on a station branded as “Energy 106.7” as well as siblings airing an Adult Contemporary and Country format, respectively.
