With all of the renewed fervor for ensuring AM radio’s continued availability in new vehicles, one longtime broadcast technology expert will be returning to the NAB Show floor for the first time in four years by demonstrating AM power savings live and in action — controlled from Las Vegas but directly benefiting “ESPN Radio 1050” in New York.
The Good Karma Brands AM is the test subject of Bob Orban, and he’s welcoming AM station operators interested in seeing real-world examples of power savings via MDCL.
He’ll be stationed in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, at Booth W2543. In cooperation with DNAV, Mr. Orban will be remotely logged into the WEPN Nautel NX50 transmitter to show its 77% power savings by using XPN-AM and running MDCL at 6 dB AMC.
“Through extensive testing, we have shown that customers running XPN-AM processing and
MDCL that supports 6 dB AMC can increase from 3 dB AMC to 6 dB AMC with little impact on fringe coverage,” said Orban President David Day. “These significant savings in power bills can pay for the cost of a new transmitter in 3 or 4 years. We have customers who have been running XPN-AM at MDCL 6 dB since 2020 – in markets from small to the top 10 – and their combined power savings are probably close to $1 million.”
Orban’s OPTIMOD XPN-AM has rapidly become an AM processor of choice in the U.S. The
product designed for AM and HD operations works in conjunction with MDCL-equipped
transmitters to provide significant power savings while bringing ultra-clean, intelligible audio and loudness to AM transmissions.
