Women’s Hockey, Ionized: PWHL Inks Scripps Sports Deal

With a hand from WPP Media to help facilitate and negotiate the partnership, The E.W. Scripps Co.‘s unit led by Brian Lawlor and digital financial services company Ally have come together to present the first nationally televised Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) game.

This will see the PWHL Takeover Tour match-up between the New York Sirens and the Montreal Victoire air on ION, with coverage beginning at 1pm Eastern on Saturday, March 28, from Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit.

The PWHL is in its third season, and following the 2026 Winter Olympics, interest in women’s hockey is rapidly increasing, Scripps says.

For Scripps Sports, the telecast underscores its efforts to bring women’s professional sports to audiences across the U.S., with dedicated franchise nights for both the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) seen under Lawlor’s leadership since relinquishing oversight of Scripps’ broadcast television stations.

Is this a test for Scripps Sports, with the possibility of a more robust PWHL offering to fans in the coming months? RBR+TVBR reached out to Scripps for comment. In response, it pointed to a comment from Lawlor in The Athletic noting that it is “a first step” and not a test run.
