WFAA Snags Mavericks Telecasts

Ten “additional” games featuring the local National Basketball Association franchise are coming to the broadcast schedule of the TEGNA-owned ABC affiliate serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It’s thanks to a newly signed deal between the broadcast TV station ownership group and the team.

Starting Wednesday (1/24), WFAA-8 will augment its NBA coverage as an ABC affiliate by bringing 10 Dallas Mavericks games to viewers through the remainder of the regular season.

The TEGNA arrangement is thanks to an earlier-reached agreement between the NBA and bankrupt Diamond Sports Group that will allow the league’s teams to join with local broadcasters for a limited number of over-the-air games during the remainder of the regular season. The remainder of the Mavericks’ games will be available on Bally Sports Southwest and the Bally Sports app.

Three Dallas Mavericks games are to be presented by the ESPN team, airing nationally on ABC. The remaining 10 broadcasts will see 19-season play-by-play veteran Mark Followill call the Mavericks games alongside Derek Harper, Devin Harris, Jeff “Skin” Wade and Lesley McCaslin. Pre- and post-game coverage will be delivered from Dana Larson and Brian Dameris. “Special appearances” from WFAA’s sports team members Joe Trahan, Mike Leslie, and Jonah Javad are also planned.

“Providing access to games has always been our top priority,” said Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall. “We are thrilled to work with WFAA to bring more fun and excitement to our ‘MFFLs’ across North Texas.”

TEGNA SVP/Media Operations Brad Ramsey added, “We are very proud to partner with the Dallas Mavericks and to make these important late-season games available to every fan, and every household, in North Texas. As WFAA celebrates 75 years, we’ve long been the home for live, local sports and local sports fans and we look forward to cheering on the Mavs right alongside their fans and our viewers.”
