Villafañe Closes On NoVa AM Purchase

In June, RBR+TVBR first shared the details of the acquisition of an AM radio station reaching listeners across the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C.

Now, the deal, which includes an FM translator, has closed, putting this station in the hands of a licensee led by Hispanic media veteran José Villafañe.

Villafañe, as the managing member and 70% equity interest holder of Costa Media Boston LLC, has completed the purchase of WFAX-AM 1220 and FM translator W264DB at 100.7 MHz, each licensed to Falls Church, Va., for $800,000.

The seller is Newcomb Broadcasting Co., which had operated the station and its translator as a home for “Teaching God’s Word.” The Christian Talk and Teaching programming has now disappeared, with programming targeting Spanish-speaking Hispanics central to Villafañe’s overall growth plans, expanding beyond Boston’s northern suburbs.

For WFAX’s seller, Newcomb Broadcasting, a longtime religious broadcaster led by Doris Newcomb exits the industry with this sale.

Eddie Esserman of the St. Simons Island office of Media Services Group served as the exclusive broker representing Newcomb in this transaction.

WFAX-AM enjoys nearly full coverage of the Washington, D.C., market as rated by Nielsen Audio. The FM translator is limited by co-channel WGRX-FM in Westminster, Md., which serves the Baltimore market.
