GAINESVILLE, VA. — From the start of 2001 through May 2015, she was a key leader within the Wireline Competition Bureau of the FCC, rising to Chief in July 2012. Since October 2015, she had been associated with law firm HWG LLP, where she became Partner.

Now, many across the National Capital Region are mourning the loss of Julie Veach.

“Julie was a superb lawyer, leader, teacher, and mentor, and was one of the nicest people you could ever meet,” said John Nakahata, Chair of HWG. “She approached every challenge with honesty, professionalism, and grace. Her greatest legacy is the many people she trained, supported, and influenced throughout her extraordinary career. She always reached out to help others develop. She will be profoundly missed.”

Veach was named Counsel in the Wireline Competition Bureau following the inauguration of George W. Bush as U.S. President. She joined the FCC after spending nearly 2 1/2 months as an associate at Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. Following her receipt of a Juris Doctor from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1997, Veach served as Law Clerk to the Hon. Michael S. Kanne of the Seventh District U.S. Appeals Court.

“Julie’s extensive government experience informed her practice at HWG, where she advised wireline, wireless, VoIP, TRS, and cloud-based service providers on complex regulatory issues,” the law firm notes. “She was a trusted advisor to clients navigating FCC rulemakings, transactions, and enforcement matters. Julie also had substantial experience guiding clients through FCC mergers and transactions, ensuring clear, timely, and effective advocacy.”

Private services are forthcoming; HWG will host an event for colleagues, clients and friends at a later date.
