Tron Dinh Do Spins an Atlanta-Market AM

Some 20 miles to the northwest of downtown Atlanta is town of Powder Springs, Ga. It is home to an AM radio station that spent much of January off the air, and has been owned by a Vietnamese-American media and entertainment figure for nearly 8 years.

He’s now opting to sell the facility, and at a fraction of the price he paid for it.

Tron Dinh Do’s Intelli LLC is spinning Class A WAZX-AM 1550 in Smyrna, Ga., to Maria Guel-led Hispanic Family Christian Network.

And, like many deals involving AM stations of late, the valuation is low.

So, how much dough is doing to Do? A $35,000 price tag was agreed upon.

Intelli acquired WAZX-AM in May 2014 for $1.55 million. However, RBR+TVBR has learned that the 2014 purchase included the WAZX tower site, hence the big difference in valuations. It is believed that the tower site is being sold in a separate transaction — one that belies the low figure associated with the WAZX license.

Since its acquisition of the station, WAZX has largely been automated, airing a mix of Classic Hits with no advertisements.

Now, it appears WAZX is ready to revert to its previous programming, which was Spanish-language Christian as “La estación de la Familia.” This aired from February 2010 through WAZX-AM’s sale.

Not involved in this transaction is WAZX-FM, which serves the far northeastern portion of the metropolitan area with a regional Mexican format.

WAZX-AM is a Class D facility licensed for 50kw during daylight hours and a mere 16 watts at night.
