TEGNA Seeks VHF-to-UHF Upgrade As Gray Needs More Time

An NBC affiliate serving Boise, Idaho, is seeking FCC approval to upgrade its facility from a VHF channel to a UHF channel.

At the same time, the CBS affiliate serving the Augusta, Ga., market is asking for more time to make its already approved shift.

For Idaho’s largest market, TEGNA seeks to shift KTVB-7 from virtual channel 7 to channel 23.

According to TEGNA, the proposed channel 23 facility will not result in any loss of
service to existing viewers within the station’s noise limited service contour (NLSC). Now, a comment and reply comment window will open, once the proposal appears in the Federal Register. Comments are due 30 days from publication; reply comments are due 45 days from such publication.

In Georgia, WRDW-12, which airs MyNetwork TV programming on its DT3 channel and NBC affiliate WAGT-CD 26 on its DT2 channel, sees Gray Television requesting a shift in the transition it has already received Commission approval for.

In May 2021, the Media Bureau gave its blessing for WRDW to move from VHF Channel 12 to UHF Channel 27. However, construction of the facility was required by June 25, 2024. That’s just days away, and as such Gray is requesting an amendment to the Table of Allotments to allow WRDW to continue operating on digital channel 12. Gray also wishes to specify the technical parameters of its currently licensed channel 12 — essentially keeping WRDW transmissions as-is.

With the FCC, undoing the Channel 27 shift requires a NPRM with a comment period. As such, the comment date is 30 days after Federal Register publication of the plan. The reply comment date is 45 days after this publication.
