For the last several years, Hubbard Broadcasting‘s WTOP Radio has come out on top as the nation’s No. 1 radio station, with respect to advertising revenue.
Now, the venerable all-News station led by SVP/GM Joel Oxley and Director of News and Programming Julia Ziegler is getting a new wave of weather reporting to provide its listeners, and it comes courtesy of Sinclair Broadcast Group‘s ABC-affiliated television station serving the Nation’s Capital.
Starting April 3, WJLA-7 meteorologists will begin providing round-the-clock weather reports every 10 minutes on WTOP News.
It’s a return to yesteryear of sorts for WJLA-7 and WTOP, as the collaboration with WJLA restarts a long-time partnership between the two news stations. WJLA previously provided weather coverage on WTOP for more than 10 years.
“WTOP is Washington’s powerhouse news radio station, and we couldn’t be more excited for this multi-platform initiative to provide excellence in comprehensive weather coverage for listeners in the capital region,” said WJLA Senior VP/General Manager Todd Bernstein. “This is an amazing opportunity to elevate both of our news operations.”
Ziegler added, “We are excited to begin this partnership with our colleagues at WJLA and bring unprecedented live weather coverage to the D.C. region, especially on those days when it matters most.”
Oxley also commented, noting, “We have the utmost respect for the team at WJLA and their outstanding weather coverage. Together our promise will be to deliver the most impactful and helpful weather reports every day to listeners throughout the region.”
The arrangement means WTOP listeners will hear WJLA-7 Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson, Eileen Whelan, Brian van de Graaff, Steve Rudin, Jordan Evans and Mark Pena across the station’s 24-hour broadcast wheel.
And, it concludes an arrangement between WTOP and WRC-4, the NBCUniversal Local station serving Washington, D.C., that was announced in March 2015.
