Silent AM Set For Rebirth Under New Owner

It is licensed as a 1kw Class C AM radio station serving one of North Carolina’s largest cities, but has been dark since July 31 of last year, when the tower site pictured (above, left) was lost.

It marked an inauspicious end to a facility offering Christian-themed broadcast programming since 1974. Now, the station’s return is in the works under a new owner.

WPJL Inc., led by William Suttles, has agreed to sell WPJL-AM 1240 in Raleigh.

The buyer is the Melissa Savage-led Divine Mercy Radio, which used the services of attorney Allan G. Moskowitz to handle the filing of the requisite paperwork with the FCC for its regulatory approval of the purchase.

For WPJL, Patrick Cross of Brooks Pierce was hired as its legal counsel in the transaction.

The purchase price was agreed upon at $30,000. However, that reflects the money being transacted; an appraisal of WPJL will be conducted, and any value higher than that amount will be considered a charitable contribution. A $2,000 earnest money deposit has been made to Suttles.

There is no broker or finder in this transaction.

Once the deal is complete, WPJL will become a sibling to WETC “Catholic 540” in Wendell-Zebulon, N.C., which enjoys a signal stretching northwest to southeast, from Danville, Va., to Jacksonville, N.C.
