Salem jumps on non-radio revenues

Radio revenues were up in Q1 for Salem Communications, but the Christian-themed media company saw the biggest gains from non-radio operations. Total revenues were up 7.2% to $51.8 million.


Net broadcast revenue was up 3.2% in the quarter to $42.7 million and station operating income (SOI) was down 3.1% to $14.9 million. On a same station basis, revenues were up 3.7% and SOI down 3.7%.

Internet revenues increased 38.4% to $6.2 million and Internet operating income gained 36.8% to $900K.

Publishing revenue increased 17.1% to $2.8 million and the publishing operating loss decreased to $39K from $97K a year earlier.

Looking ahead, Salem execs told analysts that Q2 revenues are expected to be up 5-7%.
