For Nautel’s head of customer service, John Wilton, the “aging out” of broadcast engineers is a rising concern. Why? The lack of RF knowledge could put Radio at risk in the coming years.
That has led the company to put the wheels in motion on two comprehensive training sessions as it has established a training center at its Nova Scotia facilities.
Each course will last three days and will cover FM transmitters, AM transmitters, and RF
technology essentials. The sessions will take place in Nautel’s training facility, which saw constructed completed in autumn 2025.
Wilton comments, “Many new engineers are coming in from the IT sector or straight from school. Modern transmitters are software-intensive, to be sure, but usually those new engineers don’t have a background in transmitter and RF technology. The SBE is addressing this with new training sessions at NAB, and we are hoping to complement those sessions with practical, hands-on experience here at Nautel.”
Wilton adds that the doors to the recently built training center are large enough to bring in
fully operational transmitters. For the larger power demonstrations, the group will shift downstairs to an on-site lab. “This is an opportunity to see the results of adjusting parameters, get real-time measurements, and learn safety practices,” Wilton says.
Each training session qualifies for SBE re-certification credits. Courses can be considered to be at the level of an introductory college course.
Courses will be held June 14-17 and September 14-16. For further information, please visit https://support.nautel.com/training.
