The reason: A new show on the cable channel called “Sex Box” which features couples discussing an off-screen sexual encounter immediately after it takes place in the presence of a panel of “experts” and any child that may happen to have tuned in.
Parents Television Council is collecting signatures on a petition demanding that the channel be removed from MVPD bundles.
“In order for a child to watch the Disney Channel, her parents must now also pay for a live sex show on WE tv. Something is terribly, horribly broken in the marketplace when an industry is capable of making that happen,” said PTC President Tim Winter.
“A live sex show on TV is something that might show up on a premium cable network. But in an affront to all families, WE tv is bringing that content to basic cable and potentially exposing millions of children in the process. If some adults want to watch a program like that, let them pay for it. But forcing it into the basic cable bundle and making parents and families pay for it is an outrage. ‘Sex Box’ should never see the light of day on basic cable.”
RBR-TVBR observation: Remember, the industry showing this program is all for local choice!
We will not even comment on the merits of PTC’s complaint.
The simple fact that PTC is completely and utterly outraged that not only does this program coming barging unbidden into their homes, but they are forced to subsidize it as well every time they pay their monthly bill, shows that not everybody wants everything a given MVPDs thrusts at them.
Since MVPDs think consumers should have a choice over which local broadcast television stations are included in their channel lineup, you would think that in all fairness they would also provide the same choice for cable-only channels.
Of course, they do not see it that way. They are all for choice except for when they aren’t. Or they are for choice, just different choices. It belongs to consumers for broadcast and it belongs to MVPDs for cable channels.
Please, members of Congress, please make sure you completely understand this issue before following the foolish Magoo-sighted lead of former Senator Rockefeller (D-WV) and current Commerce Committee Chair John Thune (R-SD) in thinking that their thus-far ill-fated Local Choice proposal is even remotely a good and fair idea.
