Population Tabulation Snafu Puts Annual FCC Radio Fees On Ice

“The FCC is continuing to do its due diligence to reevaluate the population count information for AM and FM broadcasters for FY 2024 regulatory fees.”

That’s how the Commission is responding to a matter that saw some radio stations being asked to submit regulatory fees that are actually higher than the ones adopted for the current fiscal year.

The revenue fees for fiscal year 2024 are as follows:

  • AM Radio Construction Permits: $585
  • FM Radio Construction Permits: $1,025
  • Digital TV Construction Permits: $5,200
  • Low Power TV, Class A TV, TV/FM Translators & FM Boosters (47 CFR part 74): $245

However, RBR+TVBR began hearing from radio industry leaders and at least one Washington, D.C., communications attorney late Friday (9/13) regarding problems with FCC fee calculations.

“We expect to have this situation resolved early next week,” the Commission said in an online post to FCCFees.com. “In the meantime, we are taking down the information on FCCFees. Thank you for your patience.”

In the words of one attorney, “Many fees, especially for FM stations, just don’t seem right.”

Annual regulatory fees for U.S. radio stations were reduced by roughly 6%.
