WASHINGTON, D.C. — With WGN America set to rebrand itself as NewsNation, building on the Nexstar Media Group-owned cable network’s prime-time news block, a new Washington, D.C. Bureau Chief is settling in Inside the Beltway.
It’s an individual who reports to VP/New Jennifer Lyons that helped Norah O’Donnell get settled in to new D.C. environs in 2020.
Taking the position is Mike Viqueira, who is tasked with overseeing the content provided for NewsNation, which debuted to much fanfare in September 2020 and is a major endeavor, budget-wise, from Nexstar.
Viqueira will oversee the development and daily operations of the network’s newly established bureau and will lead all of its Washington-based newsgathering.
For the last year, he’s been associated with the CBS Evening News, and Lyons believes Viqueira’s “depth of knowledge and long career in our nation’s capital make him the perfect choice to build out and lead our D.C. Bureau.”
Prior to his tenure at CBS Evening News, Viqueira spent 15 years with NBC News as a producer, Chief MSNBC Congressional Correspondent and NBC News White House Correspondent. He also served as Senior Correspondent and Washington Bureau Chief for Al Jazeera America and began his career at NHK Japan Broadcasting, where he produced the network’s U.S. coverage.
“This is an important moment in the history of our nation’s democracy, and I’m beyond thrilled for the opportunity to build our bureau and lead our journalists here at NewsNation D.C., as we report on the policies, politics and positions that directly impact people everywhere across the country,” Viqueira said.
A published author, Mike Viqueira is also a three-time Emmy Award winner and the recipient of the Joan Barone Award for Outstanding Coverage of Congress.
