In the late 1960s, morning radio in the Gateway City included the “Morning World Report,” a top-of-the hour comprehensive newscast that made Otis & Company with host Ray Otis a must-listen for many in St. Louis. Delivering the news with his distinctive voice: Robert Ray Lynn.

Today, longtime residents who grew up listening to Lynn on the radio and as a commercial voice are now remembering him, as a memorial service has been planned for November 6 to publicly honor Lynn.

Lynn, who was 89 at the time of his death, passed away on August 22. He was born and raised mainly in St. Charles, Mo., was married in 1955, and lived briefly in Houston before returning to St. Louis.

Robert R. Lynn, his real name, was hired as News Director at KXOK-AM 630 in St. Louis in the early 1960s.

Before FM radio was readily available, KXOK was the market’s leading Top 40 station, and Lynn was there at the height of its popularity. In his role, Lynn became known for participating in charity basketball events with the “KXOK Allstars” at local high schools and made many appearances at concerts and sock hops in the greater St. Louis area.

After 20 years at KXOK, Lynn left to work at the legendary KMOX-AM and at WIL-AM.

Beyond St. Louis, Lynn would travel from Hawaii to Paris with Ralston Purina to emcee their awards ceremonies.

Lynn also taught broadcast journalism for a few semesters at Lindenwood College.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a memorial service will be held at the Zack Theater on 3224 Locust Street in St. Louis on Sunday, November 6 from Noon-4pm Central. His daughter, Kathy Lynn, is hosting the event.
