CPR Administered For Vail Jazz FM

Community. Culture. Music.

That’s the brand promise from a noncommercial Jazz station serving the Denver metropolitan area and, until now, the ski resort community of Vail.

What does the future hold for Vail? Some may ask, as the station carrying the Jazz station is trading hands.

With 5kw of power from 8,957 feet, KVJZ-FM 88.5 in Vail has served as a simulcast partner of Class C1 KUVO-FM 89.3 in Denver.

That could be sending soon, as Public Broadcasting of Colorado, operator of Colorado Public Radio (CPR) and its three unique services, is acquiring KVJZ from Rocky Mountain Public Media.

The sale is valued at $150,000, and a $15,000 escrow payment has been made by CPR to RMPM. The remainder will be paid at closing.

Signing off on the transaction is KUVO President/GM Carlos Lando, and Public Broadcasting of Colorado CFO Jenny Gentry.

With the sale of KVJZ, KUVO’s jazz format is expected to be now heard exclusively in Denver and via an FM translator in Breckenridge, Colo.

What will CPR use KVJZ for, all signs point to a bigger home for its Classical service. “CPR Classical” presently uses K206EM at 89.1 MHz to serve Vail, and it has a limited signal due to terrain. Class A KVJZ has a much wider coverage area.

But, the “Indie 102.3” service based at KVOQ-FM, licensed to Greenwood Village, Colo., is another option for placement on the Vail signal.

KPRE-FM 89.9 in Vail already is owned and operated by CPR for its spoken word service.
