With just weeks to go before the NBCUniversal upfront presentation in New York and the start of the 2025-2026 ad-buying season, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises has promoted its Telemundo Studios Executive VP to its top role, reporting to NBCU Telemundo head Luis Fernandez.
Now serving as Chief Content Officer and Telemundo Studios Head is Javier Pons. He expands his responsibilities to include oversight of the network’s entertainment division. Pons will continue to lead the development and production of scripted content at Telemundo Studios, while adding a new focus on the development and production of the Telemundo network’s unscripted content, daily shows and live specials.
“Since his arrival to Telemundo Javier has delivered great results and strengthened Telemundo Studios’ position for the future,” Fernandez said. “I’m excited to see him apply his vast experience in production and media management to his new expanded role as Chief Content Officer. He is an accomplished media executive, and I’m confident he will continue to excel in this expanded leadership role, as he brings his expertise and creativity to our entertainment division while continuing to oversee our Studios.”
Pons is a veteran of Spanish-language television and has worked in Spain. Prior to joining Telemundo, Pons served as the General Director of Globomedia, one of Spain’s leading production companies, and Head of TV at The Mediapro Studio. In these roles, he spearheaded the creation and production of several series designed expressly for mobile and streaming platforms.
He’s also held leadership roles as some of Spain’s largest media entities, including “Los 40” parent PRISA Radio, Televisión Española (tve) and Grupo KISS Media, parent of Classic Hits “KISS FM.” In Mexico, Pons has served as an advisor and producer at On Demand Consulting and as Executive Producer at TV Azteca.
In January 2024, a veteran Hispanic market media executive with experience in Spanish-language radio and in Spanish-language television was selected to take the role of President of Telemundo Station Group. At the 2025 Hispanic Radio Conference, scheduled for mid-June in Houston, José Cancela will share why there is plenty of history to help us understand how those who first paved the way did the extraordinary, helping to build the Spanish-language media landscape that exists today.
How we can best continue to follow that extraordinary path will be the centerpiece of a Keynote Address Cancela will deliver at this year’s event.
