The return of regular season Major League Baseball games to over-the-air television has captured many headlines in recent months. Now, TEGNA is cheering no less than three freshly minted deals bringing play-by-play action to fans through their broadcast properties.
At KUSA-9 in Denver, the NBC affiliate will expand a 20-year partnership with the Colorado Rockies — sort of — as sibling KTVD-20 will simulcast 20 regular season games, starting with the May 23 home game against the New York Yankees in an intra-league matchup.
KUSA-TV and TEGNA will lead local and regional advertising and sponsorship sales for the 10 local games included in the simulcast agreement with Rockies.TV, presented by bet365; TEGNA will work with partner broadcast companies to announce additional markets within the Rockies home television territory that will be able to view these games in the coming days.
In the Valley of the Sun, TEGNA’s KPNX-12 in Phoenix reached an agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks that also sees the simulcast of 10 games across the 2025 season, starting April 25 when the team faces the Atlanta Braves. “This marks the first time in Diamondbacks history that a series of games will be televised on a local network affiliate, providing over-the-air access to fans outside of the national broadcast agreements,” TEGNA said on Thursday.
In addition to game coverage, the network will launch “D-backs on Deck,” a one-hour gameday show airing prior to each of the KPNX’s broadcasts. The show, led by sports anchors and reporters Cameron Cox, Lina Washington and Jake Garcia, will deliver in-depth analysis, behind-the-scenes coverage and interviews with team guests. The first of these shows will debut during the station’s special Opening Day takeover on Thursday (3/27).
Lastly, the San Diego Padres reached an agreement with TEGNA that sees 10 Padres regular season Saturday games head to KFMB-8 and Channel 8.2, home of The CW in the market.
TEGNA says a minimum of seven games will be simulcast on KFMB-TV, with the remaining games on KFMB-8.2. Simulcast broadcasts begin on April 26.
Correction: MLB assumed the local media rights to the Rockies after Warner Bros. Discovery shuttered its AT&T SportsNet RSN in the team’s respective territories last year. The Diamondbacks and Padres formerly partnered with Bally Sports RSNs in their respective territories. The originally posted version of this story reported this incorrectly.
Just a quick correction…the Diamondbacks actually have been on broadcast TV in the Phoenix DMA in the past. Specifically – at least a portion of their regular season games were shown on KTVK from 1998 (inaugural season) to 2007.
