On September 1, the nation’s No. 1 broadcast television station ownership group completed its $35 million purchase of KUSI-51 in San Diego from McKinnon Broadcasting Company, in a deal brokered by Kalil & Co.
With the transaction’s closing, Nexstar Media Group officially has a duopoly in “America’s Finest City.” And, KUSI has a new VP/General Manager.
It is the individual who has been leading KSWB-69, branded as “FOX 5”@Fox5SanDiego — Scott Heath. He will now be the VP/GM of both FOX 5 and KUSI.

“We are excited to welcome the great staff at KUSI into our company,” Heath said. “Localism is all a hallmark of everything we do here at FOX 5, and KUSI has been doing it for a long time and is known for their commitment to the local news and serving the local viewers. It’ll be fantastic working with them in the advance of our mission to serve San Diego viewers, advertisers and community benefit organizations.”
KSWB became a Nexstar station through its merger with Tribune Broadcasting; Tribune obtained the station in 1996 in a court-ordered bankruptcy auction.
McKinnon had been associated with KUSI, branded for many years with Channel 9 thanks to its position on Cox Cablevision systems in San Diego, since its launch in 1982.
