Hawaiian Telcom, Nexstar Reach Shaky Truce

On July 5, Hawaiian Telcom lodged a complaint against Nexstar Media Inc. with the Federal Communications Commission. The complaint was in response to Nexstar’s failure to reasonably extend its retransmission consent agreement during ongoing negotiations, leading to six channels going off-air.


Nexstar had not agreed to an extension beyond the previous agreement’s June 30, 2023, expiration date that would have allowed ample time for the parties to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. Earlier this week, Hawaiian Telcom modified its FCC complaint as it looked like both companies were reaching an agreement, then it came to light that Nexstar had two major caveats.
