Tune to “the Voice of Northeast Montana” in morning drive and you’ll hear the station’s Program Director and General Manager.
Pending FCC approval, he’ll also be the owner of a station that is being sold by Jann Holter Berntsen.
Tim Phillips through his Glasgow Media Group is agreeing to purchase KLTZ-AM and FM translator K273DB and KLAN-FM “MIX 93.5” in Glasgow, Mont., from Glasgow Broadcasting Co.
The transaction, agreed upon December 2 and submitted for FCC approval on December 22, is valued at $465,000.
Terms call for a cash payment of $120,000 at closing, followed by a lump sum payment of $100,000 to Berntsen’s group on or before July 1, 2026, together with interest accruing at 5% per annum from the date of closing.
Glasgow Broadcasting, the seller, will carry the remaining balance of $245,000, together with 3% interest, amortized over 15 years, payable by Phillips in monthly installments of $1,691.93, beginning the first month after closing.
Translator: Phillips will offer installment payments, adhering to terms seen in a Promissory Note. Installment Payments will be due on the first day of each month and will be deemed late if not paid by tenth day of the month.
The price reflects the licenses for the stations, real estate associated with them, and all of the furniture, fixtures, and equipment houses inside the offices and studios.
There is no broker or finder in this deal, as Phillips has been associated with KLTZ and KLAN since he was a high school student, in 1982. Upon graduation, in 1984, he left town and enjoyed a career that took him to Dickinson, N. Dakota; Fargo; and Fort Dodge, Kansas. In 1992, he came home to become morning host and news director of KLTZ and KLAN. In 1993, Phillips earned Program Director duties, and in 2020 gained General Manager responsibilities.
KLTZ is branded as “Big Country”; KLAN is presently in all-Christmas music mode, through Sunday.
Aside from KLAN, the Glasgow market has just four other FM signals, and all are translators — including the one associated with KLTZ. Furthermore, Phillips will have just one commercial competitor on the FM band — Country KWCK “The Wolf,” which uses an FM translator to reach Glasgow as its primary signal is far to the east. The remaining FMs are associated with NPR Member KEMC-FM in Billings and its “Yellowstone Public Radio”; and “Your Network of Praise,” a Christian ministry with a formidable presence in the Plains region.
On the AM band, the lone U.S.-based station easily audible is KLTZ-AM 1240. The five other stations are based in Saskatchewan, to the north in Canada. Regina, the province’s capital, is four hours away; Billings is even further away from Glasgow, making it one of the nation’s most remote communities.
